Systems Pharmacology and ‘Metrics: Where Have We Been, Where Are We Now, Where Should We Go?

Pharmacometics and systems pharmacology have evolved over time to make major impacts on drug development. This presentation will provide one pharmacometrician’s perspective on the history, current state, and future of the field, drawing from examples in his own career and experiences, from early days as a post-doc in a pioneering research group, to leading a new Center at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy to where the future lies in increasing the impact of modeling and simulation on the pharmaceutical industry and academia. Dr. Forrest has been charged with designing the education of future scientists in the field, and welcomes input from current professionals and trainees on a systems pharmacology graduate curriculum at UNC-Chapel Hill. Come for good stories, tasty food, and great fellowship with local colleagues!

Alan Forrest, Pharm.D., a researcher and educator with more than 30 years’ experience in pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamics modeling, is a clinical professor in the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy’s Division of Pharmacotherapy and Experimental Therapeutics and Director of the newly formed Pharmacometric Center for Precision Medicine.

Forrest received his Pharm.D. from the University of Southern California in 1979. He completed a postdoctoral fellowship in Clinical Pharmacology at USC in the Laboratory of Applied Pharmacokinetics, School of Medicine, under the mentorship of Roger Jeliffe, M.D. Forrest held appointments at USC and the University of Maryland at Baltimore before joining the faculty as director of Pharmacometrics and Biostatistical Analysis in the Department of Pharmacy Practice at the SUNY-Buffalo School of Pharmacy in 1990. Forrest held appointments at SUNY-Buffalo as a research professor in the Department of Pharmacy Practice, and in the SUNY-Buffalo School of Public Health’s, Department of Biostatistics. He also served as the senior director of Pharmacometrics at the Institute for Clinical Pharmacodynamics in Latham, New York. Since 1997, Forrest has also been working as an expert adviser in pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics to the Food and Drug Administration in Silver Spring, Maryland.
